Tutorial for Adding and Updating Products Within Woocommerce

Sometimes as a new user to Woocommerce adding and updating products on your website may be difficult or confusing at times. My goal here today is to get you unstuck and on with updating, managing, and adding your products to Woocommerce. Woocommerce may be confusing at first but, after this blog and video, you will be an expert on adding and updating your products to Woocommerce.

(Steps are always displayed below video)

A Step by Step Guide

To help you update and add you products I have created a step by step guide you can follow. The video linked in this post will also guide you through the process:

Step 1: Navigate to the dashboard of your website building platform. In this instance I am using WordPress. Locate the Woocommerce tab, click on it, and click on add new.

Step 2: The first text bar will be the product name box. Here you enter the name of your product to be displayed to customers

Step 3: Add your description. The description text box will typically be directly below the product name bar. Your description when be displayed to website visitors beneath the product images

Step 4: On the side of the description box you will see that there is a category section. Select the category the product belongs to or create a new category to add it to

Step 5: Add your product short description. To find the product description text box where you will add a short description of the product, scroll down to the bottom of the page. The short description will usually appear adjacent to the product image when a visitor views the product.

Step 6: Fill out the details section. Towards the bottom of the page you will find a product details section. Setting the product type to a simple product within the section is one of the easiest formats for you to enter your product details.

Step 7: Fill in the appropriate product details within the product section. Here you can enter the price, adjust the stock(I recommend switching the stock to “in stock) and add the product weight and shipping details if you wish. It’s not completely necessary to fill in these details but, at the minimum add the price to the details section.

Step 8: Adding product images and product gallery. Near the product details section to the right, there should be a section labeled “product image” and “product gallery”. The product image will be the main and first image shown of the product while the product gallery will be the other additional images of the product.

Step 9(optional): Adding product tags. To add a product tag, navigate to the previous section we edited labeled “categories”. Beneath the categories section you should be able to view the “add tag” section. Here you can give tags or labels to describe the product that search engines will use to find your product

Step 10: Optimizing for search engines (SEO). Above the Product details section you will see that there is a SEO section. Here you can enter the details that will be displayed to people when they search for your product or website within a search engine such as Google. I suggest you add your product short description to the SEO description text box and add your product name to the title box section.

Step 11: If you are satisfied with the product page, you can then publish the page so visitors can view the product. To publish the product page, scroll to the top of the page and within the top right there should be a blue “Publish” button.

Editing and Updating your Product page

Step 1: If you find at some point you wish to edit or update your product, one way to edit your page is by visiting the product page while logged in to your website builder (WordPress in this instance) and clicking the “edit product” button at the very top of the page.

Step 2: Make the changes you need then, navigate to the area where we previously published the page. Here you will find a similar button to the publish button but it will be labeled “update”. After clicking update, your new changes will be saved.
